So today is Day 22 of our 365 day journey together (for those wondering that means there are only 344 more days remaining) and we have a new first. What could it be you ask? Well allow me to explain it to you. On an ipod with over 9,000 songs it should be believed that there are multiple songs but the same artist, the idea of having 9,000 songs from 9,000 different bands is enough to make my ears bleed. So with this belief one should figure that we will see certain bands or artists more than once during our time together. Well folks, we have our first repeat customer today. It's a new song but it's the same band.
To be honest I was a bit surprised that our first repeat customer would be the Killers. I mean on Day 22 I figured we would have had at least one Pearl Jam song, considering that I have 880 Pearl Jam songs residing in my ipod I would say the odds would have been favorable. But no. At this stage of the game I don't believe Pearl Jam has even been the second song played on shuffle. So when Somebody Told Me started up I was surprised, keeping in consideration that I only have 40 Killers songs. I don't know the exact odds of this happening but it's seems unlikely.
So here at the internationally known A Year of Shuffling (that's right I said internationally known. I'd also like to take this time to give a shout to my Canadian, German, Swedish, U.K., Brazilian, India, and Denmark followers! You guys rock! Tell your friends, this is the first step for me towards global domination so you're fandom is much appreciated) we'd like to applaud the Killers for being our first repeat band.

So now on to the song. Does anyone really know what the hell this song is about?! It's a little weird, no? I'd actually like to take some time and dissect some of the lyrics and maybe we can get to the core of this thing. First off this song has always reminded me of Powerman 5000. I can't really explain why either. I just listened to Worlds Collide again and it doesn't sound much like this (by not much I mean not at all). Maybe it's because Powerman 5000 sounds like the Killers if the Killers were on steroids. Then again I could just be reaching entirely here and when I read this again a few days or weeks from now I'll be wondering what the hell I was thinking. Am I wrong here? Does anyone else here it?
So let us start with the line "Breaking my back just to know your name/Seventeen tracks and I've had it with this game". This line has always bothered me. It's mostly the "Seventeen tracks and I've had it with this game" part. It just comes across as whiney and bitchy. It's your first album that's going to get this big commercial release and you're bitching about putting together seventeen tracks?! It doesn't give much hope towards future records if the first one is wearing you out. Shouldn't you be excited and the most pumped when putting out your first major album? It fuels the fire of years and years of hard work and struggling. It just comes across as someone who doesn't really have their heart into it. This is just further evidence of why I don't understand Brandan Flowers and his diva like ways.
Now to the chorus. "Well somebody told me/You had a boyfriend/Who looked like a girlfriend/That I had in February of last year/It's not confidential/I've got potential" I'm sorry what? So this is what I'm getting from this song, and mind you I can't figure out if this is a personal story of Brandan Flowers or just a story written for a song. So the character in this song starts dating a girl and things are going wellish. Then he hears this rumor from a friend that this girl he knows dated a dude who looked just like this girl he's dating (stay with me). Instead of being mad or creeped out about this he's like "it's no secret that they look the same, I could go through with it". So is this song implying that this boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend was a cross dresser or had a sex change, and if that's the case are we supposed to believe the main character doesn't really have a problem with this because he figures he's always had the potential to go either way? But then why the line "Never thought I'd let a rumor ruin my moonlight"? So maybe the idea of this girl looking like a dude did creep him out and ruined the relationship? Is this song all nonsense or is there a story being told here? A part of me thinks that this song is way smarter than I am. It's all very confusing and would probably make for some excellent day time television.
This all reminds of that Seinfeld where George starts to date the girl that looks sort of like Jerry. George doesn't see it at first and as the episode goes on and on he sees more and more of it, to the point where she has to get a haircut at the end that looks exactly like Jerry's. It's all very funny and less confusing to follow then this song.
"Pace yourself for me/I said maybe baby please/But I just don't know now/ When all I wanna do is try" for me is the best line to sing in this song. Actually as it was playing in my car I was listening to the whole song up until this part where I felt compelled to sing along. It's fun. I also guess this is the character submitting to his "potential"? I don't have a clue really. It's fun to try and break down the lyrics of this song because to be honest I'm not entirely sure what it's about and whether or not it's a joke. All I know is that it's a good song that reminds me of going to the Drift Inn (a bar right on the water here on Long Island) and carrying on with friends. It also makes me think of Shea because she loves to dance around to this song when it comes on and it's really cute (insert "awwww's" here).
It was fun listening to this song this morning but I had to listen to it again (a couple of times actually) to get the full effect. As I was driving in this morning there was a tragic accident that involved dropping my Red Bull while driving. I think I lost a quarter of it and I was not too pleased, so in order to distract myself from the sudden departure of Red Bull I hit the shuffle button. So I had to listen again so I could dance about in my car, because even though this song is a bit confusing to interpret it's fun to bounce around to.
if you totally ignore the vocals i can KINDA see where you're going with the powerman 5000/killers connection. KINDA.
