Let us flashback to a time where my allergies didn't have me considering ritual suicide and my hair was much darker. Back to a time where I wasn't really sure how to grow facial hair properly (or at least maintain it) and I thought it was cool to wear colored sunglasses. Yes Shufflers lets go back to my senior year of high school (gasp). I make no attempt to hide the fact that I wasn't big on high school. It just wasn't the greatest experience in the world for me. As a matter of fact when people say the high school years are the best years I get kind of annoyed. If those are the best years of my life I'm screwed (long live the college years!) Any way that's not what this is about today. I'm not going to turn this into a long rant bitching about high school because today we're flashing back to my awesome senior year.
It's Study Hall (I want to say fourth period but to be honest I've really forgotten) and it's time to take a break. I meet up with my friends Virginia and Linda and we head out the door. The three of us are pretty much inseparable at this point. We pack into Virginia's white Crown V and off we go. Being Seniors and all there is no need to hang around for Study Halls. It's a waster of our time, and theirs. Actually it's more of a waste of our time, I can nap at home thank you very much.
Our ventures usually tend to direct us to the local deli to get egg sandwiches or lunch and if we've got the time then we head down to the beach. On days that we're feeling rebellious we do all them all and skip the next period (although this only happens a handful of times). The Study Hall trips aren't about the food though (it is an added bonus) it's about the company and the music. We listen to an array of things but Billy Joel, The Beatles, and Simon & Garfunkel are favorites with a bit of the South Park Movie soundtrack sprinkled in. Today just so happens to be a Simon & Garfunkel day.
We listen to the Concert In Central Park record a lot (I can't remember if this is the only Simon & Garfunkel album we have). It's really relaxing to have on and every so often we sing-a-long to it. We save most of our sing-a-longs for American Pie or Billy Joel or the South Park Movie soundtrack, but on occasion we slip in some Simon & Garfunkel. Still Crazy After All These Years becomes a personal favorite as does Bridge Over Troubled Water (actually 'till this day I can't listen to that song without thinking back to these car rides). These car rides are fast becoming one of the best parts about school. It's the one thing I look forward to every day. It's a nice escape from the grind, if you can call it that Senior year isn't that taxing.
Sometimes we switch up the drivers but it's usually Virginia at the helm. There was one time where I did drive and it was the day of a big track meet. Well I hit a bird (more like the bird flew into my tires) and I was convinced it was bad karma, and I didn't have a great race. So after that Virginia pretty much became our driver. This is back in the days when gas prices were like $1.20 tops so driving around wasn't that big a deal. Can you dig that?
(insert Lost woosh here)
Be sure to fill up your tanks because we're heading back to the present. Like how I did that don't you? One minute we're in the past the next it's 2011 and the whole time you haven't left your seat. My time traveling powers are something to envy. Any way Still Crazy After All These Years remeinds me of those Study Hall car rides. All the laughs and sing-a-longs. I hope to revist this time period again because there are still more stories to be told. Like the world's greatest history teacher/classroom and the lunches/study halls we would have there. But that's a story for another song.
Once we all went to college we didn't really see much of each other any more. We were all seperated but we kept in touch for the most part. As of late we've been able to keep in contact through the wonders of Facebook but it's not the same. I think it's time to get the band back together. I wonder if Virginia still has the Crown V, maybe in a garage somewhere? I'll bring the music, Virginia you bring the car, and we'll have Linda pick up some egg sandwiches. Awesomeness shall follow.
